Last week, the new Cardiff beatblogger (Hannah Waldram) and I took a spin down to deepest darkest south CF64 - to Lavernock Point, which was an old WW2 fort. It was actually built in 1870, and briefly served to guard the ports of Bristol and Cardiff after the end of the French Revolution. The first EVER wireless signals were transmitted between the fort and Flatholm Island, which is now a nature reserve a little east from Lavernock. There was also a nuclear bunker built here, which has been boarded up because of recent break ins and vandalism.
Now, the place sits totally deserted, isolated near the edge of the cliffs. An imaginary line drawn directly south from Lavernock marks the end of the Bristol Channel and the start of the River Severn (and haven’t you wondered where that is?). There’s some graffiti. The sounds of seagulls. Since the holiday camp was built, commandeering the road (Fort Road) that leads to the barracks, there’s no road access. If you didn’t know where Lavernock Fort was, you’re pretty unlikely to stumble across it by accident.
If you want to check it out - and I recommend it, despite the dire lack of public information while you’re down there it’s a really interesting place to visit - you need to take the Fort Road down towards Lavernock Point, then take the footpath through the nature reserve (the entrance is just to the right of the entrance to the holiday camp). Keep left, walk about 600m, and you’ll get there.
I think Hannah’s going to be including Lavernock in a short film she’s making about hidden places around Cardiff. I’ll let you know when it’s done and up. She’s got lots of interesting plans for the Guardian Cardiff blog - fingers crossed, I think it’s going to be very successful.
